In 2003, Sandi Globus from Ocean Wave Quilts challenged me to make a quilt using the colors in this Frida Kahlo self-potrait (below) — salmon, ochre, olive, burgandy, with a touch of scarlett. Earlier that year I had taken a class from Margaret Miller in which she was testing her angle-play techniques for her up-coming book. I used her new technique in this quilt. The blocks you see in this piece are distorted “tumbling blocks”. The quilt is 61″ x 64″, and uses hand-dyed and commercial fabrics. There is a price tag still hanging on the quilt from when it was hanging in Plaza Design – $600.
