It’s a Whole New Day

We’re about a week and a half away from the Great Departure.  It seems like I’ve been making this trip for the last four or five months…going over the maps, looking at the camping books, measuring the driving days, looking at the area’s attractions, checking the campgrounds, going back over the maps, thinking about the stop-overs, looking at the camping books, going back over the maps.  You get the picture.  I’ve been to AAA so many times in the past few weeks they don’t even need to see my card.

We’ve joined AAA Plus, Kamper Klub with KOA and updated our State Farm policy.  We’ve planned for shutting down the house for four and a half months.  We’ve got all the bills up to on-line payment.  No more cable and very little local phone.  Who knew it took so much work just to not be around.

Check out Donna’s post below to see how our shake down cruise went.  We used all the systems and the little trailer seemed to trail the truck just fine.  The fortunate thing…we’re traveling in the USA so most folks speak our language (or a reasonable facsimile) and there are stores that sell things in $’s so we should be okay should we forget something that is absolutely essential.  The most important item that’s been fully vetted…the bar.  We have all the essentials for cocktail time each and every evening along the trail, including the cocktail rotation cards (ask Donna to fill you in sometime).

So I think we’re good to go.  Unless we change our minds…departure date is 7/1/10 with the first stop being Goose Lake on the Cal/Ore border.  We plan on SLC by 7/5 for a few days at the Family History Library for me, floating in the Great Salt Lake for Donna and a Promontory Point visit for both of us at the site of the Golden Spike.  We hope to be updating this blog daily…but those best laid plans sometimes need to be revisited.  We’ll see…check back often or put us on your reader.

Mel…we had originally planned SLC for after our stay in NC and up the east coast. When that changed, our FHL stop was moved up. We’re only a few miles from the airport, so hop a flight, leave Bunny with Dylan and come spend a few carefree days with your favorite brother.
