Thirty years ago today….

…we started our trip journals.  As we depart Elko,Nevada today we will be keeping historical notes in book number five.

After our wedding in July of 1980  we left Menlo Park, Ca. to drive to Northern Michigan.  We kept notes on a yellow legal pad of our mileage, locations, restaurants and meals, and of exactly what we spent.  These notes are now  pasted them inside book number one.  A little while back Clay wrote a nice piece on his blog comparing  our journals and blogging.

With the trailer we have more storage space  than we did with just a car in the past.    And since Durry has indexed all the journals with an excel spreadsheet  we can easily look back at notes when we were last at that location…compare food habits, gas prices, routes.   We were in the new California Trail Interpretive Center in Elko on Saturday, and while looking at some emigrant journals we  realized how historical our trip journals are, and how important they will be for someone in the future.

Until “the future”, they are just kinda fun to look at.  In December of 1992 we drove from California to Uncle Kevin’s house in Iowa.  We spent our first night in Winnemucca.  These were our notes the next morning.  We drove 353 miles that day, I won $2.00 in a slot machine, and Clay did a little cross-country skiing before breakfast.  He was pretty happy about his new jacket.

We are in SLC…Donna’s got a post up on that. I’ll be putting something up soon. I’ve gotten a little behind. The FHL is amazing…and they pick us up at the KOA and take us to town. What a wonderful country.

Oh…keep your fork…there will be pie. Had some today. Watch for that post.
